The south of England is home to beautiful coastlines but Devon has one spot in particular that you’ll want to add to your list for when the weather is warm. Located in the South West, there’s one town that’s the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing break. South Molton is known for its thriving independent shops and stunning countryside making it a must-visit destination.
South Molton might look like a quiet rural town at first glance, but step onto its high street and you quickly realise it is buzzing with thriving independent shops. Sitting on the edge of Exmoor, the town is known as a traditional market town with a long heritage of trade and craftsmanship. South Molton’s market has even been voted as “Britain’s Favourite Market” in the 2026 Great British Market Awards.

The area has a population of around 5,000 people and its town square is a hive of activity.
Its high street is lined with charming independent shops, cosy cafes, and traditional pubs. You can enjoy a delicious Devon cream tea, or explore artisan shops featuring locally made products that capture the spirit of North Devon.
South Molton is filled with history. Around the town, you’ll be able to spot Medieval, Georgian and Elizabethan buildings.
You can take a walk along the Heritage Trail which guides you around the town, showing you glimpses of past and present and a wealth of interesting information.

One of the most notable landmarks in South Molton is the Gothic St Mary Magdalene Church, which dates back to the 13th century and boasts a beautiful stained glass window.
South Molton is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and there are many opportunities for outdoor activities in the area thanks to being on the edge of Exmoor National Park – a popular destination for hiking, cycling, and watching wildlife.
How to get to South Molton
If you’re travelling by train, the closest train station to South Molton is Tiverton Parkway. From here, the town is around 25 miles away by car or bus.
If you’re planning to drive, South Molton is primarily accessed via the A361 North Devon Link Road which connects directly to Junction 27 of the M5.
